Thrissur Pooram is a magnificent spectacle merging the spiritual and cultural essence of Kerala. Celebrated in the Malayalam month of April and May, the Pooramis held at the ThekkinkaduMaidanam in Thrissur. The festival commences with a flag hoisting ceremony, accompanied by fireworks that last all night, a week before the main celebration day. Mainly three events constitute the completion of the festival of Thrissur Pooram. Kudamattomceremony displays a competition of changing colorful canopied umbrellas from above the adorned elephants between two teams, namely, Thiruvambady and Paramekkavu. IlanjitharaMelam is a highly bewitching performance of traditional instruments and this traditional orchestra is led by chenda artistes and the spirit is mirrored by the thousands of spectators who wave theirhands in accordance to the rhythm generated bythe chenda, kurumkuzhal, kombu and elathalam (traditional instruments of Kerala). In Madathil Vararu the deities, Thiruvambadi Devi and Lord Krishna, are taken out in a splendid procession from their temple to the Vadakkunnathan temple, accompanied by an ocean of followers, with traditional instruments played all along.
